My Home Teacher – Teaching Agency Upgrading the Teacher-Student Experience

We all can attest to the fact that, some of us couldn’t ask questions in class because we were afraid of being laughed at or referred to as block-headed. “My Home Teacher” provides parents the opportunity to give their wards a one-on-one teacher to student experience in the comfort of their homes.

This creates a cordial environment for students to ask all questions they couldn’t ask in school. The C.E.O. satisfies our curiosity by talking startup life and his academic responsibilities.

Kindly tell us what your campus business is about?

My Home Teacher is a business organization designed to provide parents with well-qualified teachers who will teach their wards at home. My Home Teacher is aimed at providing effective teaching and learning atmosphere for students from Primary, Junior and Senior High Schools at the comfort of their homes. It is aimed at bringing the school to the various homes of students where these students are taught various academic subjects such as Mathematics, English, and Integrated Science, etc.

Where did the idea for your business come from?

My dream to become an entrepreneur aroused at a very early age during school when I attended a business seminar, where the speaker said, “Every problem or challenge is an opportunity to make wealth out of” and this line became a strong foundation for me to start something innovative that would find solution to a problem which will also become the source of income for me to earn.

Which gap did you see and intend to bridge with your business?

The gap of improving the academic performance of students and to also provide employment opportunities to qualified graduate teachers.

Does your campus inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship in students?

Not that much, but the university is doing its best to inculcate certain entrepreneurial courses to make students entrepreneurial.

How do you manage to combine both academic work and business so you are not adversely affected?

It is truly challenging to manage one’s business and academics at school, but the secret is that I am a strong advocate of setting priorities for myself. I set priorities and make sure I do the things that are only geared towards fulfillment of my dreams in life. I do not waste time at all, because for me, every second counts. Every minute is wealth creation for me. I value my time which is why I believe I am able to succeed at what I do.

How did you determine there was market for your type of business?

Most students within my boundary were performing academically poor so it was a great opportunity to have special tuition for them at home.

How did you manage to raise your startup capital?

I was able to go to students’ houses and teach them. That was where I saved some of the income I earned and used it to grow the business, My Home Teacher.

What is your business model and how do you make money?

My Home Teacher is a sole proprietorship and it currently runs as a teaching agency to connect teachers to parents who need special tuition for their wards at home.

What challenges do you come across and how are you handling them?

It is not easy to convince parents to buy into my business and allow their wards to be taught by My Home Teacher unless they trusted me. I had prepared to face this challenge from this experience in teaching where I saw the reason to help improve many students who would not perform in their education earlier. This helped me gain the trust of parents because ‘My Home Teacher’ had already reached houses at the initial stage itself.

Do you intend to continue with the business upon completing school?

Yes!

They were very supportive and advise me on some actions I should take.

What do you consider your most significant achievement so far as a Campus CEO?

I was named as part of Top 30 Young Achievers in Ghana by Newaccra Magazine. I was also nominated for 3 awards in the Ghana Tertiary Awards namely: Student of the Year, Most Influential Student in Entrepreneurship and Most Influential Student in Radio Presenting. I have also been featured in several media outlets.

What message do you have for colleague students who want to start their own businesses?

We should be entrepreneurial and solve the problems in our society rather than complaining about them. We must also work on our passion alongside the talent and make wealth out of it.

My Home Teacher is giving us the opportunity to help our children and siblings go the extra mile to be able to excel academically. I believe you have been inspired by Mr. Vondee’s tremendous story.
