Ifepariola Mary: We Raised Startup Capital from Our Feeding Allowances

As someone who describes herself as a business oriented lady, Ifepariola Mary is actually on the path to living her dream.

She is fully immersed in an online networking business which enables her make extra money, have fun and also travel around the world and this has provided the financial backbone for her campus business, where she relates that, “After school, my plan is to go into either the catering or fashion industry.”

She co-foundered her campus business with her twin and they are becoming good in spotting an opportunity when it avails itself.

Kindly tell us what your campus business is about.

My campus business is all about wears: At Martmar’s Nigeria Ltd. we specialize in the production of Lapel flowers, Bow ties and Hair fascinators. We are also into Small Chops productions.

Where did the idea for your business come from?

Firstly, the Idea of the wears came from a seminar organised in my school. My partner and I went for the training together and we decided giving it a try because it’s a lucrative business.

And for the small-chops, the idea for it came when I found myself good at small chops, so I decided turning my skill into a business.

Which gap did you see and intend to bridge with your business?

The gap I actually see is the inability to access quality materials but I am ready to turn this business into an outstanding one, I intend to go miles just to get creative with my business.

How do you manage to combine both academic work and business so you are not adversely affected?

My partner and I who happens to be my twin sister live in the same place, so we draw out plans on how to do business and not be affected by academics.

How did you determine there was market for your type of business?

I determined by studying my environment. This is a business that’s in high demand. I did feasibility studies.

How did you manage to raise your startup capital?

I raised my startup capital with my partner from our feeding allowances.

What is your business model and how do you make money?

I can make money by producing what my market demands. I succeed in that with the aid of marketing it via social media as well as other offline means.

What challenges do you come across and how are you handling them?

We face the challenges of getting the right material and that is handled by improvisation .

Do you intend to continue with the business upon completing school?

Yes I do… It’s a business I want to expand in terms of the wears and small chops.

How did your colleagues and family respond to your new venture?

Honestly, they were wowed. Because we put our creativity to work and the quality is intact, so they responded well. The packaging not excluded, it’s an added advantage.

What do you consider your most significant achievement so far as a Campus CEO?

Being able to prove other students wrong that even in school one can own a business.

What message do you have for colleague students who want to start their own businesses?

My first message is to think out of the box, get creative and they should first do a study of the environment.

Ifepariola Mary is spotting opportunities and ready to take advantage of them. You should also study your environment and see what you can turn into a blossom business whiles on campus.

Iamgeneius – Bridging the Media Sector Gap in Ghana and Strives to be Industry Best

The CEO of iamgeneius confesses of the places the pursuit of his entrepreneurial dream has taken him. Eugene now has teaching engagements, works with top local and international organizations and has had a slot to be part of the British Council’s Enterprise Africa Young Entrepreneurs, among countless others.

This startup has a huge vision of becoming a top notch multimedia company in Ghana providing quality services in all levels of the economy. The business boasts of enthusiastic team members comprising of other students with diverse skills. Clients not paying for services was a major challenge for them but find out how they have smartly dealt with this hurdle successfully.

Kindly tell us what your campus business is about.

Iamgeneius is an emerging multimedia brand which focuses on Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, Cinematography, Photography and Web Development. It’s vision is churned to becoming one of the best multimedia companies.

Where did the idea for your business come from?

The idea came in level 200 when I was done with my multimedia class that semester. I realized the gap in the media sector and saw my window of opportunity. Also as a creative person from birth, I needed to enhance it and see how I could make money out of my hobby rather than pursue a job I didn’t really love for security reasons.

Which gap did you see and intend to bridge with your business?

Many a times, people will ask me if I knew who could build them a stunning website, business cards or refer them to a photographer. I did that for sometime and I wondered if all those referrals were to come to me? So I decided to up my game. Also my whole life, I’ve wanted to live life on my own terms and become my own boss. Starting up “iamgeneius” was the right step.

Does your campus inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship in students?

Well, not really. There are entrepreneurship courses one could read though, but unlike my school, some other schools will organize an entrepreneurship summit from time to time to encourage students and the likes.

How do you manage to combine both academic work and business so you are not adversely affected?

There’s time for everything. I make sure when it’s time for academic work I respect it, so as business. I’ve built a team around me from different universities so as to step in when I step out and vise versa.

How did you determine there was market for your type of business?

I know IT is emerging, so are its career opportunities. Every business will want a website, call cards, online identity. We also make sure the portfolio we build around ourselves will want you to call on us.

How did you manage to raise your startup capital?

I discussed my startup with my parents who decided to loan me the amount for starting up. Also, I got team members who were willing to invest in this great idea.

What is your business model and how do you make money?

We’ve adopted two models namely, the freemium and the subscription model. These two helps us keep our clients and hence make more money. So if you need a business card for staff of your firm, we offer you a free logo if you don’t have one, etc. organize almost free photo shoots, where we focus on the numbers. We get money from all the services we offer. Currently our brand management offer is booming.

What challenges do you come across and how are you handling them?

Some bad experiences are when clients do not want to pay for a service delivered. Sometimes with services that need samples, clients end up paying for one and then pirate the others unknowingly. Some will tell you they don’t want the work but after some months you will see them using them, especially the logo designs.

Solutions like making 70% upfront payment, our watermark logo on samples and others has proved to solved these issues for us.

Do you intend to continue with the business upon completing school?

Yes, what I’ve started here goes beyond just school. It has already started sourcing out already. It’s a dream and history I’m trying to create not some kind of campus play. We at iamgeneius intend to start working full time offering our National Service with iamgeneius.

How did your colleagues and family respond to your new venture?

My family has been very supportive since I started. However, my mum thinks it has to be my second stream of income, meaning I will still have to work with my dream firm for sometime, this I believe makes sense. Also, friends in the beginning thought I was joking about it, before they could say “jack” it was too late. Everyday friends and school mates ask me to be part of my team.

What do you consider your most significant achievement so far as a Campus CEO?

I’ve had the opportunity to change the minds of students career-wise. Students and others take me for role model, even when I’m little. This and many more bring me joy.

What message do you have for colleague students who want to start their own businesses?

It doesn’t cost to dream, so dream big. However, nothing comes to a dreamer but a dream. We must live life on our own terms not by employer’s terms.
