TeachersAroundMe: The EdTech Start-Up Reviving The Education Industry in Nigeria

TeachersAroundMe, a company which focuses on digital distribution of professional teachers, linguists, counselors and skill trainers with clients was launched mid last year in Nigeria.

It is currently one of the most independent, self-funded and fast growing edtech startups on the African continent. The startup emerged due to challenges facing education, morals and skill acquisition system in the country.

The main challenges identified by this startup company are illiteracy, language barrier, immorality, unskilled individuals, unemployment and lack of professionalism of the people in the system and also the uneasy access to qualified professionals.

The TeachersAroundMe platform allows qualified professional Teachers, Linguists, Counselors and Skill Trainers to register and get listed for free. Professionals on are also allowed to state their own salary, where and who they prefer to work it.

According to Arik-Olakunle Awodein, TeachersAroundMe Founder and CEO, there is a distinction between TeachersAroundMe and other existing platforms. He stated that, part of the major differences emanated from how heavily competitors charge and inconsiderate they can be. He further streesed, though TeachersAroundMe has been bootstrapped over the years, and running a tech business being very expensive, “we still do not want to transfer this cost to our users. We’re in for fair treatment for all. We are here to redefine lives positively, not make it unbearable, and by so doing, we place our users first,” he said.

They have made huge progress within a very short period of time, having over 6,000 professionals and about 4,000 clients in the space of one year without spending on marketing.

There’s no doubt that TeachersAroundMe is doing something differently amongst her contemporaries in the edtech scene in Nigeria to have reached this milestone without VC backing.

Plaqad Raises US$1.5M in Seed Fund, Launches Marketing Platform

Plaqad, a marketing and public relations software start-up, has raised US$1.5 million in seed funding led by its parent company, BlackHouse Media (BHM) and launched a marketing platform that lets brands advance an affordable, data-driven campaign from start to finish.

BHM is an international media and public relations company whose CEO is the founder of both companies.

Plaqad is scheduled to release its automated communications platform, built to help brands, agencies and individuals run end-to-end social and web campaigns.

According to Plaqad, it is the first solution to offer a one-stop shop for all things needed to implement a successful marketing campaign.

Plaqad’s initial offering SocialCred’s algorithm measures real influence and minimizes influencer fraud by downplaying traditional metrics like follower count, reach and impressions, focusing instead on engagement rate, audience sentiments (positive, neutral or negative), and the creators’ ratio of original to shared posts within a 30-day window.
